Self-rescue basics
Self-rescue course 1 gives you the foundations for helping and rescuing a second climber on rock.
This course builds the core competence you need to handle incidents that can arise on the rock when a normal rappel or lower is no longer enough.
After the course you will be able to carry out the central techniques of self-rescue on rock. You learn to release and unload systems, raise and lower an injured climber, prusik up a rope, rappel past a knot, and stabilize or move a person who cannot continue on their own. We also cover how to structure a simple first-aid kit and work methodically under stress.
The course is taught from the perspective of the leader and requires that you are already comfortable leading either traditional or bolted routes and can work independently at an anchor. It is aimed at climbers who want to take responsibility for their own safety on longer routes and build robust routines for unexpected situations.
Everything you learn is intended to give you a solid foundation for continued development before Self-Rescue 2.
Duration: 2 days.
